How to find pickleball near you

Updated November 3, 2026 ยท By Matchd

The fastest way to find pickleball near you is to start with your city or county parks department, then check indoor clubs and rec centers, then look for where people are actually playing at your level. A court is easy to find. A good game on it is the hard part, and that's what most of this guide is about.

Start with your parks department

Most public pickleball in the US is on city and county land. Search " parks pickleball". Most parks departments keep a page that lists which parks have courts, whether they're dedicated pickleball courts or lines painted on tennis courts, and how play works (first come, first served, or reservations).

What to look for on that page:

In Louisville, for example, Louisville Parks lists indoor play at several community centers and takes court rentals through its online booking system. Our Louisville guide and Howard County guide walk through what the local parks departments offer.

Check indoor clubs, gyms and rec centers

Indoor pickleball has grown fast. Most metros now have at least one dedicated indoor club, and many YMCAs, gyms and churches run pickleball in their gyms. Indoor clubs usually charge per session or by membership and run organized open play by skill level, which is useful when you're new to an area. See indoor pickleball: where to play in winter.

Free pickleball courts

Public park courts are almost always free to use. Some cities charge only to reserve a court, and indoor community center play is often free or a few dollars. If a court is free and first come, first served, expect a paddle rack or a waiting line at busy times. Our open play guide explains how that rotation works.

Can you play pickleball on a tennis court?

Yes. A pickleball court is 20 by 44 feet, much smaller than a tennis court, and the net is a little lower: 36 inches at the posts and 34 inches in the middle. One tennis court can fit up to four pickleball courts with portable nets, or one or two with the tennis net (play over a tennis net at its own height, which is a few inches high for pickleball).

Look for a second set of narrower lines, often in a different color, with a line 7 feet from the net on each side. That's the non-volley zone, "the kitchen," and it's the giveaway that a court is marked for pickleball.

Use an app, but know what each one is for

Court finder apps and sites are good at answering "where is a court?" They list thousands of places, but a pin on a map doesn't tell you whether anyone at your level will be there on Tuesday at 6.

That's the gap Matchd fills. It shows games near you, not just courts. You pick how far you'll go (1 to 25 miles), and games are ranked by how well they fit your skill, with each game's skill range on the card. You can join an open spot in a tap or post your own game at your court. See how to find pickleball players and games.

When the court is empty

If you show up and nobody's there, you're early or it's the wrong time. Most public courts have regular windows: weekday mornings, weekday evenings after 5, and weekend mornings. Ask whoever is there when the regulars play, look for a sign-up board or a club notice on the fence, and come back at that time. Or post a game for that window so people at your level can find it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find pickleball courts near me?

Start with your city or county parks department's pickleball page, which lists which parks have courts and how play works. Then check local indoor clubs, YMCAs and rec centers. To find people to play with, use an app that shows games, not just courts.

Where can I play pickleball for free?

Public park courts are almost always free, usually first come, first served. Many community centers also run free or low-cost indoor drop-in sessions. Indoor clubs usually charge per session or by membership.

Can I play pickleball on a tennis court?

Yes. Many parks paint pickleball lines on tennis courts. You can use the tennis net, or bring a portable pickleball net (36 inches at the posts, 34 in the middle) to fit more courts.

How can I tell if a court has pickleball lines?

Look for a smaller court outline, often in a different color, with a line 7 feet from the net on each side. That 7-foot area is the non-volley zone, or kitchen, and only pickleball courts have it.

Do I need to reserve a pickleball court?

It depends on the park. Many public courts are first come, first served, with a paddle rack or line for waiting players. Some cities let you reserve courts online, and indoor clubs usually require booking or sign-up for open play.

How many people play pickleball?

SFIA reported about 24.3 million Americans played pickleball at least once in 2025. That's why popular courts get busy, and why showing up at the regular times matters.
