E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park: what to know before you play

Last checked October 28, 2026 ยท By Matchd

If you play pickleball in Louisville, you'll end up at Tom Sawyer. The state park in east Louisville has the city's best-known outdoor pickleball complex, and on a nice morning it's where the scene is. Here's what to know before your first visit.

The courts

Kentucky State Parks opened a 16-court outdoor pickleball complex at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in July 2021, built by converting six tennis courts. At the grand opening it was billed as the largest pickleball complex in Kentucky, big enough for regional tournaments. The state said at the time that the courts would also be reservable by park guests and used for leagues, tournaments and family nights.

The park itself is one of Louisville's big recreation parks, with sports fields and trails, so you can make a morning of it.

How play works here

Most days, the courts run as open play: bring your paddle, find the rotation and wait your turn. With 16 courts, waits are usually short except at peak times. Leagues, clinics and tournaments use the courts at set times, so check the park's page or events before planning a big group session. New to open play?
