Pickleball rules for 2026: the basics, plus what changed
Pickleball has a handful of rules that cover almost every rec game: serve underhand and diagonally, let the ball bounce once on each side before volleying, stay out of the kitchen when you volley, and only the serving side scores in traditional scoring. This is our plain-English summary of USA Pickleball's rules. The official rulebook wins any argument.
The serve
- Underhand motion. Your arm must move upward when you hit the ball, contact must be at or below your waist, and the paddle head can't be above your wrist. A drop serve (drop the ball and hit it after it bounces) is also legal and doesn't have to meet those motion rules.
- Feet behind the baseline. At contact, at least one foot is behind the baseline and neither foot touches the court or goes outside the sideline or centerline extensions.
- Diagonal. Serve crosscourt into the opposite service court. It must clear the kitchen; a serve that lands on the kitchen line is short and a fault.
- One try. You get one serve attempt, no second serve.
The two-bounce rule
The serve must bounce before the receiver hits it, and the return must bounce before the serving team hits it. After those two bounces, anyone can volley (hit it out of the air) or play it off a bounce. This is why the serving team usually stays back for the third shot.
The kitchen (non-volley zone)
The kitchen is the area 7 feet from the net on each side, lines included. You can't volley while standing in it or touching its line, and it's a fault if your momentum carries you into it after a volley. You can stand in the kitchen any time, and you can step in to hit a ball that has bounced.
Faults
A rally ends with a fault when a player:
- serves into the wrong court or into the net,
- hits the ball out of bounds or into the net,
- volleys before the two bounces have happened,
- volleys from the kitchen,
- lets the ball bounce twice on their side,
- touches the net or net post during a rally, or
- is hit by the ball (or their clothing or gear is) before it bounces.
If the receiving side faults, the serving side wins a point. If the serving side faults, they lose the serve.
Line calls: a ball touching any line is in, except a serve that touches the kitchen line, which is short.
What changed in 2026
USA Pickleball's 2026 rulebook made several changes. The ones rec players notice most:
- The volley serve is checked more strictly. The motion rules now say the paddle must move in a "clearly" upward arc and contact must be "clearly" at or below the waist.
- Spin on the serve: you can't spin the ball with your hand when you release it, but the paddle can put spin on it at contact.
- Rally scoring (provisional): under rally scoring, the receiving side can now win the game on the return-of-serve rally. Tournament directors choose whether to use rally scoring.
- Ball hits a fixture after bouncing: if a ball bounces in your court and then hits a permanent object (like the net post) before you return it, that's your fault.
- Double hits: hitting the ball twice is legal only in one continuous stroke in one direction by one player.
- Score challenges must be made before the return of serve is hit. A late or wrong challenge is a fault.

Frequently asked questions
What is the kitchen rule in pickleball?
You can't volley the ball while standing in the non-volley zone (the 7 feet on each side of the net) or touching its line, and you can't let your momentum carry you into it after a volley. You can stand in it and play balls that have bounced.
What is the two-bounce rule?
The serve must bounce once before it's returned, and the return must bounce once before the serving team hits it. After that, players can volley or play off the bounce.
Do you have to serve underhand in pickleball?
Yes, for a volley serve: upward arm motion, contact at or below the waist, and the paddle head below the wrist. A drop serve, hit after the ball bounces, is also legal.
Do you get two serves in pickleball?
No. Each server gets one serve attempt.
Is a ball on the line in or out in pickleball?
In, except on the serve: a serve that lands on the kitchen line is short and a fault.
What are the new pickleball rules for 2026?
The main 2026 changes are stricter wording on the volley serve motion, no hand-applied spin on the serve, a provisional change letting the receiving side win on the return rally under rally scoring, and clearer rules on double hits, fixtures and score challenges.
