What is DUPR, and what's a good DUPR rating?
DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating) is a rating system that gives every player a number from 2.000 to 8.000 based on match results. Unlike a self-rating, your DUPR moves with how you actually do against the people you play. Many clubs, leagues and tournaments use it to group players by level.
Matchd isn't affiliated with DUPR. This page is our summary of how DUPR describes its own system; the DUPR links at the bottom are the official word.
How DUPR calculates your rating
According to DUPR, each match uses three things: whether you won or lost, the ratings of the players you played, and the type of match. DUPR measures how you did against expectation. Beating a higher-rated team raises your rating, and losing to a lower-rated team lowers it. A narrow win you were expected to win easily can even lower it a little.
Not all matches count the same. DUPR says club and tournament results count more than self-posted recreational games, because they're verified.
You get two separate ratings, one for singles and one for doubles, because the formats reward different skills.
How to get a DUPR rating
- Create an account in the DUPR app or on the DUPR website.
- Play matches that get recorded: at clubs, leagues and tournaments that submit results to DUPR, or by posting your own recreational matches.
- Until your first verified match, your rating shows as NR (not rated).
DUPR recommends logging at least 10 to 15 matches before treating your rating as reliable.
The reliability score
Next to your rating, DUPR shows a reliability score from 1 to 100%. It's DUPR's estimate of how well your rating reflects your current level. It goes up as you log more matches, especially matches submitted by clubs or DUPR's verified data partners, and as you play a wider variety of partners and opponents over the past 6 to 12 months. It drops if you go a long time without playing. DUPR recalculates it weekly. It doesn't change your rating itself, but clubs may use it to decide who's eligible for an event.
That's why a 4.2 with 90% reliability means more than a 4.2 with 20%: the first one has a lot of matches behind it.
What is a good DUPR rating?
"Good" depends on who you play. As a rough guide, most recreational players fall in the 3s, a 4.0 or higher is a strong club player, and 5.0+ is advanced tournament level. The skill descriptions in our skill levels guide line up with those numbers in spirit, but DUPR is calculated from results, so your DUPR and your self-rating may not match at first.
How to improve your DUPR
- Play rated matches against slightly stronger players. Wins against higher-rated opponents move you up the most.
- Play regularly. More matches give a more accurate rating and a higher reliability score.
- Fix one weakness at a time. Unforced errors on your weakest shot cost more points than anything else.
- Mix partners and opponents. Variety improves reliability and keeps your rating honest.
DUPR vs. a self-rating
A self-rating is your own estimate. A DUPR is calculated from your results. Self-ratings are fine for casual games, but they drift: people tend to over- or under-rate themselves. In Matchd, self-rated players show a ~ before their number (like ~3.5) so everyone knows it's an estimate, and games are ranked by how well they fit your level.
Frequently asked questions
What does DUPR stand for?
DUPR stands for Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating. It rates players from 2.000 to 8.000 based on match results.
How many matches do you need for a DUPR rating?
You get a rating after your first verified match, but DUPR recommends logging at least 10 to 15 matches before the rating can be fully trusted.
What is a good DUPR rating for a beginner?
Most beginners start in the 2s and reach the 3s with regular play. Focus on playing rated matches against players near your level; the number will follow.
What is a DUPR reliability score?
It's a 1 to 100% score showing how confident DUPR is that your rating reflects your current level. It rises with more matches and more varied opponents, falls with long breaks, and updates weekly.
Do recreational games count toward DUPR?
Self-posted recreational matches can count, but DUPR says club and tournament results carry more weight because they're verified.
Is DUPR the same as a USA Pickleball skill level?
No. USA Pickleball's skill levels describe what a player can do at each level. DUPR is a number calculated from your match results. They're related, but they're not the same thing.
